Listening Part 3 - An introduction - C1-C2

LISTENING FOR KEY INFORMATION

Introduction to Listening part 3

The focus

The focus of Listening Part 3 at Expert and Mastery level is to listen to a monologue and to extract key information with which to complete a set of notes.

The focus is on accurate identification and concise communication of factual information which is given amid a lot of irrelevant and potentially distracting commentary.

The order in which the information is given in the monologue is always the same as the order the items appear on the message pad and each item is discrete, not dependent on a previous correct answer.

Answer type

A message pad with a heading and seven prompts and space to write the correct information for each prompt.

  • Answers are one to five words

Note!

Your answer won’t be accepted if you use more than five words so make sure you remember this when you do any practice for this part of the test.

  • It will always be possible to keep your notes to under five words.

Format and content

Listen twice to a monologue which may take the following forms:

  • lecture

  • radio broadcast

  • Narrative

  • Presentation

  • answerphone message

It will contain a range of factual information.

Format and content

  • There are seven questions in this part plus an example, which is always the first note.

  • You are always given 10 seconds to read the uncompleted notes before listening to the information.

How to prepare

You need to listen to a wide variety of monologues that contain lots of factual information.

Being aware of the kind of information you need to listen for is one of the skills required for this part of the test.

At this level, you need to listen to longer stretches of spoken language to learn to be able to edit out irrelevant information and focus on what is essential.

Radio broadcasts, podcasts, audiobooks etc, offer excellent practice and it will help you to prepare for the test if you listen to monologues outside the classroom as well as in lessons.

To help prepare you should do the following lessons:

  • Explorers c1-c2

  • Farming c1-c2

  • Cycling c1-c2

  • Summarising in five words or less c1-c2

  • Listening for information c1-c2
