Mastering 'For' and 'Since': Time Expressions Simplified

"Since" and "for" are both used to describe the duration of an action or situation, but they are used in different ways. read on for a short explanation and some practice exercises.


Explanation:


  • "For" is used to indicate a length of time. It is followed by a duration (e.g., two hours, three days, five years).







Examples:

I have lived here for five years.
She has been studying English for six months.

  • "Since" is used to indicate the starting point of an action or situation that continues up to the present. It is followed by a specific point in time (e.g., last year, 2010, Monday).


Examples:

I have lived here since 2018.
She has been studying English since January.
